Service Learning Spotlight

Each year students from every grade level choose two different Service Learning topics that are integrated into their daily schedule. These topics allow students to take what they learn in the classroom and put them into practice in the real world.  Participating in Service Learning fosters a relationship between students and the community and allows students to see the entire community as a place of learning.

This semester's Service Learning highlight comes from first grade.  The first graders chose to make "Supporting our Veterans" their Service Learning topic for the first semester. Our students got a chance to start their project with a visit from 2 soldiers from the U.S. Army. The soldiers read some books with the class and the kids got to ask them questions about what it’s like being in the military and what it means to serve your country. The first graders will also be taking part in the "cell phones for soldiers" charity. They will be collecting old smart phones and tablets through December 3rd 2016. If you would like to donate your old smart phones or tablets, please contact Mr. Allen at allen.gregory@detroitsla.org.
